501 12TH ST. TRASH: Trash was again overflowing this week in the dumpster on the 1200 block of E Street NE that belongs to 501 12th St. NE. It was already overflowing on Saturday and was not picked up until Tuesday. Yafet Alem, an official with Independence Management Company who oversees the management of 501 12th, on Wednesday returned phone messages left for him on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of the previous week. He said he had agreed to increase the number of trash pickups at the site. Dale Lipscomb, the vice president of operations for Goode Trash Removal, said his company will collect trash Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, instead of Tuesdays and Fridays, beginning this coming week. He also said a larger bin will be installed. Both Mr. Alem and Mr. Lipscomb said they were willing to schedule a pickup on Saturdays, if it proves to be necessary. Both said people who don't live at 501 12th appear to be using the bin illegally. If that's true, it would be great to find out why do neighboring apartment buildings not have enough bins of their own? Both Mr. Alem and Mr. Lipscomb said they felt that enclosing the bin with a fence would not help. They said people who find a fence around the bin would just throw their trash on the sidewalk. I placed an additional call with the mayor's call center (727-1000) on Monday and was given confirmation number 519053. Regarding call 519053, which I had placed on July 21, the operator said inspectors came out on July 22 and found nothing upon inspection.
