GW Medical Center Offers Emergency Response Training

By Sharon Cochran, 1300 block of Emerald Street NE

The George Washington University Medical Center is offering training for 620 D.C. residents to enable them to help themselves, their loved ones and other citizens when disaster strikes. The goal is to create a team of volunteers will support the needs of professional first-responders and be of service to our community.

There will be several sites that will deliver a training program designed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

These free classes will 1) present citizens with factual information about what to expect in the event of a disaster, 2) train citizens in necessary life-saving and decision-making skills; and 3) organize teams of citizens to offer immediate help to the victims until professional help arrives.
The CERT program will be comprised of eight courses (20 hours total), covering the following areas: Disaster Preparedness, Disaster Fire Suppression, Disaster Medical Operations, Light Search and Rescue Operations, Disaster Psychology and Team Organization, Terrorism, and Course Review and Disaster Simulation.

Upon completion of the class you will receive an emergency kit containing useful emergency supplies.
