GOODS AND SERVICES: For Each Button, $1 to the Homeless

Interview by Marc Borbely, 536 13th St. NE

John Millender Sr. has lived on Duncan Place since December 1993. I asked him to expand on his reasons for his button campaign.

Basically, I'm against the war — and the fact that I think poor people in this country is getting a bum rap. We have people here homeless, can't get affordable housing, our seniors are not being taken care of properly, our kids are not getting the basic education they need. We just need some changes —
definitely need some changes. And I think the way we change, is go to the very top.

The other thing is we want to give part of our earnings to the homeless. For each button we sell, we want to give a dollar to the homeless. I just feel we've got to start somewhere.

With the homeless, where would the money go?
I think 2nd & D Street. That's where Mitch Snyder used to work. I think he was the founder and the chairperson of that particular shelter.

How did you become interested in that whole issue? Why is that something that you care about specially?

Because I have two friends of mine that were homeless at one time, and they needed help. §
