POLICE: If Your Tags Are Ever Stolen...

By Elizabeth Hague, 500 block of 14th Street NE

Neighbors, beware — the tags were stolen off of our car just before Memorial Day. We don't drive
our car much, so we noticed it when we received a $100 ticket for not displaying tags (and a second the next morning while we were at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) getting replacement tags)!

Luckily we noticed this before our car was towed. Hopefully, this will not happen to you, but if it does, this is what you do:

a. Call the police (311) so they can issue a police report of the stolen tags. Hang on to that report.
You need it to get your new registration and to get any tickets forgiven.

b. Take the police report and your old registration to the DMV to get replacement tags.

c. If you get a ticket (or tickets) for not displaying tags that have been stolen, or if someone does something illegal on your stolen tags, you can get the tickets forgiven if you do a walk-in hearing at the K Street DMV. Be sure to bring the police report and your new and old registration. You can probably contest the ticket by mail too. §
